More than 75 years have come and gone since The Colonel delivered that first truckload of lumber and Causeway Lumber remains committed to building on the foundation that the Whiddon family was committed to: Providing quality materials and services to home and industry alike.
In 1939, with $500 borrowed from his wife’s in-home laundry business, O.R. purchased a pick-up truck a leased a small piece of land on the corner of the 10th Street Causeway and Andrews Avenue. Today, 10th Street is referred to as ‘Sunrise Boulevard’.
In 1950, following service in the US Air Force, OR’s son Gene joined the firm in a full time capacity. Gene A. Whiddon had worked in the business after school and on weekends prior to this time and had a firm grasp of the business.
O.R. received his commission as a full Kentucky Colonel and from that time forward he would be affectionately known by all as simply “The Colonel”. It was at this same time that Causeway began experiencing its most significant growth.
With OR’s passing in 1971, son Gene was named president. Under his direction, the company would grow to serve all of Florida south of Lake Okeechobee from 7 locations and a branch operating in Candler, North Carolina.
In 1981, Scott Whiddon joined the firm in a full time capacity. Father and Son had the opportunity to work together for eight years until Gene’s death in 1989. Later that same year, third generation family member M. Scott Whiddon was appointed president
The landscape of South Florida was forever changed when Hurricane Andrew made landfall in 1992. Despite the setbacks suffered, Causeway along with the building industry roared back to record levels as homes were rebuilt and building codes strengthened.
The new millennium would prove to be a roller coaster ride for Causeway and the entire building industry on both the national and local level. South Florida residential housing starts peaked in 2005 at an unprecedented high of 92,068 units.
Despite the severe setbacks that the industry endured in the late 2000’s, Causeway continues to “lumber along” with South Florida thanks in large part to the loyalty that our associates and supplier-partners alike express day after day in their dedication to our on-going mission….to satisfy completely our customers.
Causeway Lumber Company is currently operating out of its new state of the art location and is still servicing the South Florida Area. Come check us out!
